An evening dedicated to Ethnomusicology of Nepal

“Sounds of the Sacred Valley” is a cultural celebration highlighting the rich heritage of traditional Nepali sounds and showcasing the deep roots of Nepali music. This event is brought to you in partnership with GCNA Nepali Pathshala.

With performances by renowned artists Shyam Nepali and Nabin Shrestha, the event promises a blend of soulful melodies and powerful rhythms, celebrating the timeless beauty of Nepal’s musical traditions. From the enchanting tunes of the sarangi to the rhythmic beats of the tablaa and madal, it will be an evening with immersive experience that connects the past with the present. Shyam Nepali

Shyam Nepali is one of the world’s foremost virtuoso artists in the Nepali Sarangi, the four string fiddle native to Nepal. Shyam comes from a legendary musical family in Nepal, and has represented Nepal’s Gandharvas around the world since the start of his career in the early 1990s.  

Hailing from the centuries old Gandharba musical tradition of Nepal, Shyam Nepali has enjoyed an almost 30 year long career bringing the sounds of the Sarangi to audiences around the world. Shyam’s creative and virtuoso musicianship has allowed the traditional sound of the Sarangi to travel in new directions musically. His virtuosity and musicianship allows him to fearlessly expand the Sarangi’s expressive capabilities with every note.( https://www.shyamnepali.com/)

Nabin Shrestha

Nabin Shrestha stands as a prominent figure within Colorado’s artistic community, renowned for his mastery of the classical tabla. Through his consistently captivating and dynamic performances, he has etched his name as a preeminent percussionist, captivating audiences both in Nepal and the United States. Nabin possesses a profound grasp of diverse traditional tabla styles and tonal nuances, endowing him with a unique ability to seamlessly unite his artistry with musicians and dancers spanning various musical genres.

Nabin remains deeply entrenched in music’s embrace, imparting his knowledge through teaching and enthralling audiences with his performances. He has enriched the academic landscape by conducting workshops, lectures, and demonstrations at esteemed institutions including Colorado College, University of Denver, University of Northern Colorado, University of Colorado Boulder, Naropa University, and the University of New Mexico.
